Inspiring English Linguistics Education and Consulting

English - A World Language

At English Linguistics, you can find research, teaching, writing and publishing on all aspects of the English language. The mission is to guide through any aspect of linguistic development in the English language with expert commentary and innovative learning.

Based in Thomas Hardy's Wessex, near Jane Austen's Bath, and John Fowles' Lyme Regis, English Linguistics is founded by a Somerset boy who went off to London to train as a barrister before changing direction to spend 30 years in A-level classrooms, university seminars, and English exam boards thinking, talking, and writing about the English language.

Marcus Barrett, a trustee of the Winchester-based English Project, has been a student and teacher of English linguistics across the South West of England and as far afield as Florence, Virginia, and in the UK has given lectures at the universities of Winchester and Bristol. For 15 years Marcus ran the English Language A-level programme at Richard Huish College, Taunton, training many hundreds of students in English linguistics and many student teachers.
